From 2011 to 2013, Van Alen Books was an architecture and design bookstore, event space, and public reading room designed by LOT-EK located at Van Alen Institute’s headquarters in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Van Alen Books was also supported, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and through public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
The publication is a testament to the student efforts, as they actively bear the responsibility for their motivations and actions.
Discussion will focus on the nature of production and current paradigms of education—engaging with ideas and relationships over disciplines.
The Beacon, a proposal for a renovation of Chicago’s Union Station will be at the center of this new age, and our design proposal symbolically represents this new paradigm.
